Why Gratitude Matters for Happiness

Practising thankfulness shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have. It can help strengthen our relationships and appreciation for our connections with others. Taking a moment to acknowledge the people in our lives for their support and love deepens our bond with them. This sense of connection is essential for our mental well-being, as studies have shown that social support is a strong predictor of psychological resilience. 


Another reason to practice gratitude is that it actively lowers our levels of stress and anxiety. When we consciously cultivate gratitude, we activate the part of our brain associated with positive emotions and rewards. Gratitude counteracts the effects of stress hormones such as cortisol, leading to a greater sense of calm and relaxation. A thankful mindset is a positive mindset and by focusing on the positive aspects of our experiences, we become more resilient in the face of adversity.


So how can we incorporate gratitude into our daily lives?

  • One simple way is to keep a gratitude journal, where you write down three things you're thankful for each day.

  • Another is to set a daily reminder on your phone to set aside five minutes to practice gratitude.

  • Try to make it a habit to express your gratitude to others, for example, thanking a friend for their support, or a coworker for their hard work.

  • Write a thank you letter to someone you appreciate

  • Practice kindness and selflessness

Very quickly gratitude can become a habit, and with it follows a positive and resilient mindset.
